This is my boss steve.
Steve is the most world renowned scholar on ancient Islamic coins. He knows more about them than anybody else. He can tell you who ruled, when, where, what happened to them when they were three, how they were dethroned, and what coins were in circulation at the time. He also knows more about California geography then anyone I know. I think he's been to every city in the state and knows every highway and freeway that gets you there. His brain is a perfectly accurate time line. He is turning 68 tomorrow and still travels the world unearthing coins and appraising collections. A truly amazing individual as eccentric as he is brilliant. Happy birthday Steve!

Mushrooms!
Mushrooms never get old! This is how I've been keeping busy while the weather refuses to cooperate and throngs of visitors from out of town have come knocking on our door. I am happy to call two of the best foragers of wild fungi around my close friends and am always happy to have them over for mushroom feasts and the such. These usually come with ample wine, cocktails, dessert, and a healthy side of hilarity...

Just a little something i thought would be fun for the holidays...
So as we all know, i'm a big fan of getting my yoga on to keep me soft and supple in between magical bike rides. Three Dog Yoga Studio has been a key player in my quest as well as keeping my head screwed on straight. So it makes sense that i should dabble into making them fun products using my burgeoning sewing skills. So i came up with the sweat towel, which ended up being good for all matter of workouts, and recently for the holidays the savasanah/sweat towel combo gift pack.
These little eye pillows have one side made of soft terry cloth and the other some smashing vintage or recycled fabric from my collection. They are all filled with organic pearl rice which is awesome if you want to nuke them for a couple seconds and warm them up. Perf after a long stressfull day. Each set includes an eye pillow and a towel and retails for $ 32.00. So far so good they seem to be a hit! Looks like i need to plan my Christmas stock a little better next year...
In other news...I will be making a full run of Steelman Cycles hats and bags after the new year. If you don't know about Steelman Cycles you should....

Sometimes I do this.
Big coin auction at my work tomorrow. Pulling a twelver. Should be exciting! i've never been part of a real live auction before!!
i don't usually do this but....scary.
This picture was in my inbox this morning when i got to work with this caption underneath it...:
Sarah Palin doesn't even pretend to have her speech memorized, as she holds out her palm to show the notes on it while speaking at a fundraising dinner at California State. The former governor jokingly referred to the technique as a "poor man's teleprompter."

Dogs.
Can't go to Chi town without having a dog! Scarfed this bad boy while waiting for the bus on Michigan ave.. Ate it super fast cause i didn't want to get yelled at by the bus driver. Delicious but...i got a stomach ache...or maybe it was all the espresso i drank cause i was so stoked to find good coffee at Intelligentsia.

Nordquist
500 tweens all learning how to dance under one roof. The angst was palpable. You pretty much needed a chain saw to cut through the hormones, and akwardness. Perfect experience for my girl...wish i had had the chance.

The only proper substitute for a bike ride....the beach.
Saturday dawned and the rain seemed to decide to hold off for a bit. We had the girls for the whole weekend ( which never happens) so we did the only thing that made sense....we planned a huge meal we could all make together and piled in the car and head to the beach.
The weather at the beach was the kind that I love most, where its all foggy and gray, no sign of wind and its suprisingly warm!
It wasn't long before socks coats and layers were abandoned by a landmark log and running and jumping in the waves became the activity of choice...
Naturally no trip to the beach would be perfect without a stop at wildflower bakery....
Even Opal left her preteen doldrums and cracked a smile...
On the menu for dinner: Ham and Cheese Puff Pastry (sorry for the sideways pic my computer is not cooperating.)
Meatloaf, Mash Potatoes, and Brussell Sprouts ( can you believe I had never made meatloaf?)
And Chocolate Chip Pecan Pie....I think we burned thru like 3 or 4 sticks of butter last night making dinner. It kinda makes me a little gaggy when I think about it but then again maybe thats why everything tasted so good!
This morning its pouring rain again so my plan to go burn off some of those calories via bycicle are pretty much foiled. Coming up on two months now since I've worked a decent ride in. Just my commute back and forth from sebastopol with Violet. Driving out to the beach reminded me how much I love riding my bike there and how different everything looks when you are not inside a car. I need to set a goal for myself...every chance I get grab the bike and go for it. Even if its just for an hour. There has to be a worthy hill around here somewhere....

I sweat, you sweat, we all sweat...and get dirty.
I sweat...a lot and I get dirty....a lot. So I came up with these a while back. Nothing crazy, just a little towel to take along with me and spread on my yoga mat or throw into my car after those particularly dirty, wet bike rides.
I originally started making these out of vintage Deutsch terry curtains from the sixties that I found at a thrift store. I pretty much bought them out and was quite disgruntled to find out that there was a limited supply of such curtains. So i had to switch it up and use regular terry with a patch of cool vintage material. I don't know i almost like them better this way....the good folks at three dog yoga loved them and they are now a staple in there arsenal of cool stuff you can buy in there studio. If you don't know about three dog yoga you should. It is pretty much the best place to get your assana on. Run by Anna and David Guhin ( he also has his hand in the AMGEN Tour de California) Three Dog has everything a yoga studio should have. Great classes, great teachers, a clean enviroment and peaceful atmosphere. Check there website online for a description of their classes and a schedule. And then gooooooo, just go. You won't regret it...
This weekend marked the first of the Monkey Cross series here in Santa Rosa by those amazing folks at Bike Monkey. True to form it started pouring the night before and didn't stop until the day after. This made for some incredible racing in the mud...the photo opportunities were endless. Their next race is the SF Bike Expo, which I won't be boothing this year 'cause i'd rather roll around say hi to folks and have fun, check it out the course is always insane crazy!
To finish things off here are a couple of pictures of some brave souls who took on the mud and raced on saturday. They should of brought a towel...

Luce-Retrotec-Colorways
Okay this is a total flash back but its so dang cool I had to post it. Kenji San (creator of Bunjo) is the master at making bikes look just so...this is the progression of my beloved 650b luce rigs paint job. I finally settled on a paint job reminiscent of the datsun 510 of the late seventies. What can I say I am a sucker for that car and can't wait to have a mid life crisis so I can get one...

Violet and hot air balloons!
Well its october and we're still at it! The commute from Sebastopol to Santa Rosa doesn't feel like a huge feat anymore but just what we do to get to work and back. Pretty much the best part of my week. Violet is completely on board and loving it. Yay! the best part of riding in the spring and fall in Sonoma County is the fleets of hot air ballons peppering the sky in the early morning. you can barely see them here in the picture cause all i had was my iphone. You'll just have to trust me on that....
