Loretta's hawaiian shirt...

Once my friend Loretta gave me her shirt and told me to go for it so i did...

...eight million months later i finished it. Added a new little feature which is reflective pipping around the pocket. Cause you can't be visible enough out there....hope she likes it.

Urban Burp

Yesterday I went to the most amazing place...If you haven't heard of the fabric store Urban Burp its high time you do! I had a great scavenger hunt planned at various thrift stores, discount fabric stores and the such but I also wanted to check this one store that I remember my friend talking about a couple of years ago. Yes, that is how long it takes me to act...

I was not disappointed. I had such a great time perusing the unused vintage fabrics from the 20's to the early 90's and chatting with owner Electra that time slipped, bolts piled and all we had left was time for lunch and quick cup of joe.

I'll be back...

All you can eat Indian across the street was the perfect way to end the experience. They pretty much had one of the best saag paneers I've ever had.

...and sparkling cool Indian paintings on the walls...

NAHBS 2011- Jennifer's market bike

My friend Jeremy Sycip, of Sycip Designs fame, asked me to make these bags for his wife Jennifer's birthday bike and the North American Handbuilt Bike Show which is happening right now in Austin,Texas.Naturally i was super excited to take on the task. It involved making two rear paniers and a front basket bag for your basic wald baskets. He built these custom racks for them and wanted something fun to put inside them.

There was a lot of measuring and pattern cutting...and late nights...Jeremy and I just finalized what he wanted a mere week before the show so I needed to get cracking!

.

Luckily the girls were out of town so I basically shut myself up in the shop for forty eight hours trying stuff and making it happen...and voila!

Pretty stocked on these! Now if only the NAHBS fairies could of picked me up and taken me to Austin all would've been perfect...

Prizes and another blast from the past...

And here are the next Grasshopper prizes for the Fort Ross episode. A day late but what are you gonna do...apparently all went off with out a hitch and the rain held off until the end of the day. Yay! I bet the views were amazing...

In other news here are some more family camping pictures I ran into the other night at my parents. Our first camping machine was a volkswagen van. I didn't realise, until jeffe pointed it out to me, that it has the same racing stripes as my new Retrotec bike (my retrotec bike). This subconscious picking of stripes comes back later in the post when you see pictures of the apartment I grew up in. Can you say 70's modern?

by the end of the trip my dad a full reindeer rack tide to the top of that thing and an attention reindeer street sign stashed inside...

Sleeping quarters were kinda tight but we made do. Thats my eyeball peeking out...

Which brings us to the apartment I grew up in before I came to the states. I seriously think I've been trying to recreate this in every living space I've been in since. The entryway way is my favorite with its red velvet wallpaper.

really wishing my mom still had the Turkish knitted flag pillow in the next picture....again wallpaper = amazing.

aaand the living room. Full of various treasure from all their adventures. Their house today looks very much like this too but with a South American / Western theme. I swear those two nail it everytime.

Okay, I see a break in the clouds...time to take the old legs for a spin....

Once when i was little...

Once when i was little I lived in China for a spell. It was 1982 and they had just let foreigners back into the country.

We lived in separate buildings with our own cooks. We shopped in separate stores and used separate money. My best friends were the cooks. I would hang out in the kitchen for hours...

When i was little family vacations looked like this. My father had a big love for deserts and we would drive from France to Spain and then take a boat to Morocco, Tunisia, or Algeria. One time we tried to cross the Sahara Desert. My dad got sick half way and we turned around...

We met a lot of cool people....

Our accommodations looked like this. A Land Rover my dad altered to fit the bill. I remember my dad making the the pop top out of fiber glass in our living room....

My brother and I had miles and miles of dunes for a playground. Sometimes we wouldn't run into anyone for days...
